A few simple ways to play.

Draw an instrument

Tap Draw, then draw one or more lines. Tap Play to turn your drawing into a physical instrument. If you want a starting point, open the Library and choose an included instrument.

Play or reshape it

Tap a joint or drag across the instrument to make sound. Drag empty space to turn the view. Tap Cut, then a connection to change the structure and its sound. Undo restores your last change.

Hear it play a song

Tap Listen to hear the selected song played on your current drawing. Tap Songs to choose another. Soft Geometry and Twinkle, Twinkle are free. Plus songs play a 15-second preview first.

Record a song

Tap Record on the main screen, then play. Tap the stop button to finish and save the song in your library. A recording captures the app's audio, not your microphone. Leaving the app finishes and saves an active recording.

Save and share

Open the instrument options menu to save or share the current instrument. In the Library, filter by Instruments or Songs, source, or author. Use Import for a .bones instrument or an audio file. Open an item's options to export it, edit its name and author, or delete it.

Instrument files preserve their shape and tuning. Songs are audio recordings, not editable note arrangements. Exported files include their title and author. A completed share marks the item as exported; canceling does not.

Shape sound in Workshop

Tap Workshop, then Shape sound. Choose Brighter or Less bright and tap Find physical edits. Listen to A and B with the same audition settings, then Keep version. Your original stays in Versions.

Record and edit a changing performance

Open Workshop > Perform > Record actions > Start take. Strike joints, cut connections and repair them using the drawing or labeled buttons. Stop take, then Keep take to save the actions and the starting drawing. Tap a saved action to move its beat, then Play to hear the edited performance. You can also use Add action to arrange a sequence by hand. A cut changes sound already ringing. Export saves a stereo WAV and an editable workshop. Discarding a replacement keeps your earlier sequence.

Hold a joint while playing

In Workshop, choose Damp or Pin. Hold a joint with one finger, then pluck elsewhere with another. Damp reduces ringing near the held joint. Pin holds that joint in place. Lift your finger to release it, or tap Done to return to normal playing.

Learn or export a sound family

Learn by listening lets you predict a change, then hear the model result, a single vibration mode, or local damping. Try another drawing saves your first comparison. On the next drawing, tap Save experiment. Open Saved experiments to replay the exact before and after sounds, prediction and result, even after changing your current drawing. Sound family exports related WAV sounds plus your editable .boneswork workshop and recipes. Open a .boneswork file from Files to resume its drawing and settings.

Use the AUv3 instrument

Add Sound With Bones to an instrument slot in a compatible AUv3 host. In the app, use Workshop > Share drawing for AUv3. In the plug-in, open that .bones file or a .boneswork file from Files. The host plays it through MIDI and saves its drawing in the host project. The plug-in does not send MIDI output or support MPE.

Sound With Bones Plus

Plus adds eight more songs, eight sculpted Plus shapes in the Library, recordings up to 10 minutes (free recordings stop at 1 minute) and WAV export from Workshop. Drawing, playing, cutting, recording, saving, sharing, Workshop comparisons, performances, learning and the AUv3 instrument stay free.

Choose Yearly with a 7-day free trial, Monthly, or a one-time Lifetime purchase. Payment is charged to your Apple Account. Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. To cancel or change a plan, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, or use Manage subscription in the app's How to play & settings. To restore Plus on a new device, open How to play & settings and tap Restore purchases while signed in to the same Apple Account.

No sound?

Check your device volume and selected audio output, including connected Bluetooth headphones. If another app interrupted audio, return to Sound With Bones and try again. You can safely close and reopen the app; saved library items remain.
